Extreme Ownership - by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin

This book is about taking ownership of your life, in all aspects. The moment you take responsibility for every part of your life, is the moment you can change it. Below is a brief summary of some key points of the book. This should not replace reading the book, but allow you to get a good idea of what the book is trying to accomplish, so you can determine if it would be a good book for whatever goal you are trying to achieve.

Extreme Ownership

  • There's no one else to blame

  • If it impacts me, I own it

  • Taking full responsibility for every aspect of your life and all of its components.

No Bad Team, Only Bad Leaders

  • They put the best leader on the worst team, and the worst leader on the best team, and the worst team won.

  • But the best team still came in second, even with the worse leader.

Believe

  • If you don't have an enormous "why", when things get tough you will quit.

  • When performing a duty, you must know why you are doing it. If you don't, then it is your job to seek out that clarity.

Check your ego

  • It can be a driver, but it can also lead to failure

Cover and Move

  • Team Work

  • It's hard to follow orders without trust

  • Build relationships

  • Instead of finding fault with others, find ways to mutually support each other

  • It's not about you, its about the greater mission of the overall team

Simplify

  • Break things down into their least common denominator

  • If a mission, plan, task, or business venture feels overly complicated to those who must follow it, then you have failed.

  • They can't execute , if they don't understand

Prioritize

  • Take a step back, analyze the strategic picture, determine the highest priority task, execute to accomplish that highest priority task, then move on to the next priority.

Decentralized Command

  • Everybody leads

  • You can only lead 4-6 people personally

  • Empower leaders

  • "If I died today, could you continue?"

Leading Up The Chain of Command

  • If leaders aren't giving you the support you need, then it's your fault for not getting it

Decisiveness amid Uncertainty

  • Before making a call, relax, take it all in, gather info, think logically, then act.

  • Regret minimization - Choose the path with the least amount of regret

  • Decisions that can be reversed are preferable

Discipline Equals Freedom

  • Be disciplined to attain freedom
