The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster - Chapter 1

I will be catching up posting my notes on each chapter of The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster. Hopefully this will serve as a useful tool to come back to in the future when you need inspiration.

Chapter 1 - The Height Requirement

  • "Love is what makes the ride worthwhile" - Franklin P. Jones

  • The first and most important factor in building a successful business is that you have to love it.

  • You have to love what you do, otherwise you will quit

  • "Looking for my passion" is an excuse in disguise. We use it to cover up for the fact were not progressing.

4 Light Switches to Passion

1. Switch 1: Being passionate about what you do

  • Nothing is awesome all the time

  • "This work is going to suck 95% of the time"

2. Switch 2: Being Passionate about why you do it

  • Passionate about fulfilling a mission

  • If you are truly in love with the results of what you do (the why), then you can navigate the tough 95% with grace and passion too

3. Switch 3: Being passionate about how you do it

  • The passion is in the quality of the activity, the execution, and the outcome

  • You can flip the "how" switch on at anytime

  • It just requires bringing a level of presence, joy, energy, into everything and anything you choose

4. Switch 4: Being passionate about who you do it for

  • Means to an end switch

  • You might not be passionate about what, why, or how, but you do it with passion because of who it benefits

Finding Your Fight

  • You can hack your ancient brain, and use it to give you "superhuman" powers - all you need to do is "find your fight"

  • The hate of something negative can be powerful but if thinking about hate feels uncomfortable, start here

  • Think about what you love. Now whats the opposite? What threatens that? Who or what could stop you from achieving that? There is your enemy

  • Strength isn't about how much you bench, its about how well you can identify your unique advantages, and flex those muscles to move your business

  • When you understand your unique strength, gift, and contribution, you can more easily let go of everything else, and go about the business of flexing that muscle, while filling the seats with people who have strengths you don't.
